Do what I say, don’t do what I do

Saddam was undoubtedly a bloody dictator, that’s sure. But did anyone have the right to kill him, especially in that brutal way? Not in my opinion.
The people who ordered (or authorized or even allowed) it certainly felt that was the right way for him to pay for the barbarities he did, but are they sure? Take a look to what have been happening, directly related to his dead:
- Hanging ‘makes martyr of Saddam’
- Clashes over Saddam execution
- Video of Saddam’s hanging leads to more violence in Iraq
- Child dies while imitating Saddam’s hanging
The question to be is asked is if executing Saddam resulted in a better World. And the answer is no, it didn’t.

Hi
I’m not usually a supporter of the death penalty and obviously don’t expect this particular case to be an easy decision, for all the reasons that you posted.
The only thing that I can comment here and is my only reason for accepting that the man was hanged is that if he hadn’t there would certainly be a *lot* of people being taken hostage to try and exchange for him. that would be and endless problem, while the current agitation will soon be replaced by other problems - they have a lot of them in the Middle East.
You might also want to have a quick look at the cartoon on Visão this week, it’s a bit cruel but true.
Hi Nuno,
Well, he was in jail for quite a while (while being judged, that’s true), but I don’t recall any hostage situation with the goal of freeing Saddam. Were there any?
Is there any chance you could send me a digital version of that cartoon, please?
Thanks in advance.

Do you think that Rui Pimentel would mind if I translated his cartoon to English? I really think it’s worthwhile for everyone to see.
Why don’t you do like Visão does with foreign contributions? they just publish the original surround it with a black frame and and add subtitles in it. no messing with the original artwork and always add a link to the source.
You have some great ideas!
I’ll do that.
[...] On my last post about Saddam’s execution Nuno (you know who you are) mentioned a cartoon of a famous Portuguese magazine, making fun of Bush comments on Saddam execution. I really think this cartoon should be made available for the entire World, so I included a free translation (that, I hope, follows Nuno guidelines). [...]
