Online politics

The shift to the online World has been happening for a few years, but politics has surely not been on the front row (no even on the first dozen, I’d say). Nonetheless, we’re maybe experiencing what could be the precursor of the New Online Political: John Edwards.
John Edwards has gone were no “known” politic has ever been before: YouTube. He pre-announced his candidacy for the 2008 Presidential Elections through a video posted on YouTube, isn’t that something? (As a side-note, I first saw this information at a Mashable Social Roundup post).
Whether you like him or not, whether you think his speech is ridiculous or interesting, whether you hate or love him, he is being original. He’s using a new tools for the masses and, probably unknowingly, changing the communication mechanisms of XXI century politics.
Who knows if in the near future our governments will address the nation through a personally delivered videocast?

I think Edwards is great but I just don’t know what has changed since 2004 except that he is two years older. The more I think about the Dems in 2008, the more I think the nomination is Al Gore’s to lose: he was robbed in 2000, has been consistently right on Iraq (unlike Hillary), and will not have a problem with either cash or name recognition… I wrote a story on this at http://www.minor-ripper.blogspot.com

To be honest I don’t quite actively follow American Politics, but I’m also not sure if Edwards is the kind of person American people would want for President.
I admire Gore and I’d be very happy if we turn out to be the next American President.

I think that your post only says that John Edwards’s staff saw what others haven’t seen yet. Internet is becoming more and more a channel for masses.

Absolutely. But politicians have a problem with the masses: they need them but they don’t want to be like them…
